Elevate: What made you decide to undergo eyelid surgery?

CINDY: I sought out treatment mainly because of my appearance. I wasn’t feeling very good about myself, and it only got worse when people assumed I was older than I am. I hated the way I looked, and the fact that I was experiencing vision issues because of the sagging skin above my eye didn’t help. Putting on makeup was a travesty, and despite using various cream and gels that promised to tighten the skin, nothing helped. It got to the point that I was feeling depressed because of the numerous comments I received about either my eyes or my age, so I began to look for a doctor who could help.

Elevate: How did you choose  Dr. Sproule as your surgeon?

CINDY: I have a niece who had gone to Dr. Sproule for a procedure, so that was what brought me to him initially, but it was talking to him and his staff that convinced me he was the right doctor for me. I almost immediately felt right at home with everyone in his office. The confidence he showed me made me feel at ease, and though I was scared at the thought of having surgery performed around my eyes, he had me so relaxed about the whole thing that I looked at it as no big deal.

Elevate: How long after your procedure did you see results?

CINDY: It was about one week after the surgery that I saw the first glimpse of my results. The swelling had gone down a good deal, and I kept looking in the mirror, as I couldn’t believe my eyes could look the way they did. When Dr. Sproule removed the excess skin and fat, it actually opened the area to more light and changed the way I saw things.

Elevate: How do you feel about your results?

CINDY: After the surgery I felt like I was on top of the world. My confidence was through the roof. I started dressing the part and began wearing makeup again. I feel so good about myself now and am enjoying life. My 23-year-old daughter and I go shopping for clothes and makeup together now, and the many compliments I get since having the procedure make me wonder why  I didn’t do it sooner. I’m so thankful to Dr. Sproule and his staff for such a wonderful outcome.

Elevate: What initial concerns did Cindy express about her eye area?

DR. SPROULE: Cindy was interested in suggestions for correcting the sagging of her eyelids and extremely puffy eyes, which are frequently called bags. Though she came in primarily to address their appearance, she didn’t realize the magnitude of her problem in that the skin around her eyes was also causing functional impairment because it was preventing her from seeing optimally.

In terms of procedure options, despite the fact that there are several procedures and treatments that could address her problem, including certain kinds of injections, laser treatments, topical creams and gels, I recommended conventional eyelid surgery, since this is the very best intervention to target the excess skin and fatty pouches around the eyes.

Elevate: What does the procedure involve?

DR. SPROULE: In order to perform both upper and lower lid surgery, the procedure begins with extremely careful measurements and markings. The lower surgery involves an incision immediately under the lower eyelid in a natural crease, followed by the elevation of the skin to expose the fat, which is carefully repositioned back under the eye where it has herniated out from. A careful evaluation is made as to whether the eyelid needs to be tightened or shortened, a very minimal amount of excess skin is removed and the incision is closed. For the upper lid, an incision is made in the natural crease of the lid after careful measurement, and removal or insetting of excessive fat is performed.

Elevate: Who is the ideal candidate for this surgery?

DR. SPROULE: An ideal candidate is someone with excessive skin or fat accumulation around the eye area, as is someone with a generally aged appearance to the eyes. If droopy, baggy eyelids run in your family, this procedure can be done at a younger age to offset their effects. It’s also a great option for those having functional impairment, as Cindy did, with vision—especially when looking upward. However, patients with medical conditions such as thyroid disease, ocular conditions, such as glaucoma, and some conditions that cause dry eyes may not be great candidates for this surgery, as risks may be increased.

Elevate: What is recovery like and how long does it last?

DR. SPROULE: This surgery is not overly painful therefore, strong pain medication is not usually needed. Should excess tearing or dry eye occur, lubricating eye drops may be applied, along with cool compresses.

Elevate: What is the average cost of this procedure?

DR. SPROULE: This particular surgery cost approximately $5,400.
