Deep Chemical Peel

Description: Often a good choice if your skin has fine lines or scarring from acne, a chemical peel can also improve skin that is discoloured or affected by pre-cancerous changes. Although usually performed on the face, peels can be done on arms, legs and chest.

How it's done: A chemical solution is painted onto your skin, then removed. The effect is similar to a sunburn. When the crusts that form over the peeled area fall off, fresher skin is revealed below. (You can also try a "Lunchtime peel," an inexpensive procedure that uses glycolic acid.)

Complications: Rare; these may include scarring, discolouration and infection.

Recovery: Ten to 14 days.

Cost: $1,500 to $3,000; Full: $2,500 to $6,000.
