Salon Smile

Whiten your teeth without the wait. BY CHANTEL SIMMONS

Many dentists offer in-office whitening systems, but if you can’t get an appointment before your date on Friday night, you can now check in with your favourite salon or spa. BriteWhite Teeth Whitening System has just launched in Canada and is available exclusively to spas and salons.

“As an esthetician, I could do everything from head to toe for clients, except whiten their teeth,” says Joyce Osborn, who owned a hair salon and wellness spa for 26 years. “It bothered me to have done such a great job with hair, skin, makeup and nails when, at the end of the makeover, the client still had yellow teeth.” Osborn developed BriteWhite and found a distributor that would take the machine and service to salons and spas exclusively. “It’s very gratifying and exciting to be leading a groundbreaking development for esthetics and professional teeth whitening across Canada,” says Jeff Alford, CEO of Cosmetics Based On Nature Inc., the Richmond Hill, Ont.-based distributor of BriteWhite in Canada. “We are delighted to be working closely with Ms. Osborn to bring an extremely effective but lower-priced teeth-whitening service to people in the friendly and relaxed atmosphere of salons and spas.”

The device, which is placed in the mouth around the teeth, uses Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) to produce a cool blue light. This light activates a paste (applied to the device) to whiten the teeth up to 11 shades in less than 45 minutes. Since BriteWhite uses carbamide peroxide instead of hydrogen peroxide, fluoride or alcohol, the mixture is low in acidity, so there’s less chance of sensitivity than other whitening products and treatments with higher acidity levels. And the best part? You just might be able to squeeze in time for a manicure. $200–$300 per treatment.

Don’t forget to visit the dentist! These salon, spa and at-home helpers can’t substitute your regular checkup and cleaning. The Canadian Dental Association recommends most people visit the dentist every six months. Depending on how well you care for your teeth and gums at home, it could be more or less often.

AT-HOME HELPER

Got five minutes? The latest edition to the Crest Whitestrips family takes just five minutes to whiten your teeth. Crest Whitestrips Daily Multicare works like typical Whitestrips to remove surface stains, whiten teeth by deep cleaning and protect teeth from everyday stain buildup, but can be worn anytime, anywhere – even in the shower. Now that’s what we call multi-tasking. $50.

DENTAL DO-GOODER

Know someone who doesn’t have dental coverage? During the month of April, which is Oral Health Month, Crest and Oral-B will make a donation to the Dental Canada Fund (DCF), the official charity of the Canadian Dental Association, to help Canadians gain access to proper dental care. It’s all part of Teeth for Life, an innovative program created by Crest and Oral-B. To support this cause, go to teethforlife.ca during Oral Health Month and click on the Teeth for Life logo.
