scrub

Dry, rough skin is a common winter affliction — and moisturizer isn't the only solution.

To improve texture and tone, and get the skin on your body back in silky shape again, it's important to exfoliate regularly. We've put together a collection of the very best body scrubs, polishes and exfoliants. Here's why they're so great.

1. BEST FOR ROUGH SPOTS

Origins Ginger Body Scrub ($41, at The Bay and Sephora; origins.com). Dead sea salts and invigorating ginger zest slough away dry skin, especially around the elbows and knees. And the essential oils (with hints of ginger, clove, eucalyptus, coriander, lime, and orange leave the skin soft and sweet-smelling all day long.

2. BEST LATHER

Change is Gonna Come Foaming Body Exfoliator (made with Fair Trade Certified brown sugar and vanilla) ($15, 1-800-265-AVON; avon.ca). We love the way this scrub lathers up right away, preparing the skin for shaving or moisturizing and also, leaving us smelling as sweet as brown sugar. And the compact bottle is a good fit for a gym bag.

3. BEST SCENT

Soap & Glory Scrub 'Em and Leave 'Em body buff ($14.99, at Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix; soapandglory.com). It's thick, pink and sexy smelling, thanks to the addition of Mist You Madly, a Soap & Glory exclusive scent which is flirty and floral, with top notes of citrus, bergamot, mandarin, jasmine and freesia on a mix of musks, sandalwood, vanilla and amber.

4. BEST IN THE SHOWER

Clinique Sparkle Skin Body Exfoliator ($23, at Clinique counters and Clinique.ca).We use this when we need to wake up in the morning, or when we're craving exfoliation but don't have much time. It lathers on contact and spreads efficiently over the entire body. The fresh scent is invigorating and it leaves our skin feeling tingly and alive.

5. BEST TEXTURE

Skinn Sweet & Smooth Sugar and Shea Butter Body Polish ($18.50, at Skinn.com). Of all the scrubs, we loved the texture of this one the best: the essential oils didn't feel greasy and the salt pieces weren't too rough and large. We also adored the smell, which actually made us salivate, and stayed with us all day.

6. BEST FOR SENSITIVE SKIN

Biotherm Lait de Gommage gentle exfoliating milk ($35, at Shoppers Drug Mart and biotherm.ca). The grains are so fine they're almost imperceptible, and are suspended in a rich, moisturizing base. Once you start to scrub, the formula transforms into an ultra-gentle milk.

7. BEST AT-HOME SPA TREATMENT

The Body Shop Spa Wisdom Maroc Black Olive & Argan Oil Scrub ($28, at The Body Shop; TheBodyShop.ca). You can pretend you're at a Moroccan hammam spa without having to pay the airfare. The ground argan nuts and olive stone provide pure exfoliation, while the argan oil delivers incomparable moisture.

8. BEST ALL-AROUND

Kiehl's Creme de Corps Soy Milk & Honey Body Polish ($30.50, at Kiehl's stores and kiehls.ca). It nurtures the skin with shea butter and jojoba butters and sweet almond oil, and exfoliates with ground Luffa fruit, which smoothes away dead skin without drying skin out. Skin is left feeling soft because of the honey and soy milk. And it smells like the best vacation we ever went on.
